Planet AntaresThe hiring process is a key element in operating a profitable business. It is important that companies always view employees as an investment. What a company invests in an employee is what they will get in return through work ethic, attendance, performance, and dedication. The following information may serve as a guide through the hiring process from start to finish.

The first order of business is to assess the needs of the company. Make a list of the job duties that will be performed each day and what type of availability is required. This brainstorming session should lead to a formal job description for each open position.

The next step is to determine what is budgeted to compensate employees. This includes hourly wage, or salary, and benefits. Other types of benefits included in an overall compensation package can include any or all of the following; paid vacation, paid sick leave, personal days, health, dental, and vision insurance(s), 401K or retirement plans, profit sharing, health savings accounts, and flex spending accounts.

The third step is to actively recruit candidates. The most effective recruiting method is networking with professional contacts to exchange information about potential candidates. Other methods of recruitment include; internet job boards, classified ads, employment agencies, temp agencies and registering with local colleges and universities.

Next is the selection of a talent pool of highly qualified applicants that have been selected during recruitment. Now the process of contacting the individuals to set up the initial interview may begin. Prior to the interview process it is important to create a list of interview questions. These can vary in style and can include; situational based, closed and open ended questions. It is also important to have a standard evaluation system to analyze the candidates during the interview.

Following the initial interview it must be determined whether a second interview is necessary. If it’s’ decided that a second interview is unnecessary the next step will be to perform reference checks for selected candidates.

If the reference check is satisfactory then the selected candidates should be contacted for permission to do background checks. It is important to receive documented permission and quite commonly the candidates are asked to sign and agree to these terms upon initial employment application.
Finally, after receiving the results of the background checks the selected individuals may be extended a job offer. An offer letter must be generated outlining the agreed upon salary and benefits package, this letter is to be signed and dated by the employee.

Upon completion of this process an employee has officially been hired and a start date may be determined.
